The first Olympic Games in the modern era, held in Athens in 1896, represent a historic moment that marks the revival of an ancient tradition in a contemporary form. After more than a millennium of interruption, these Games were recreated thanks to the vision of Pierre de Coubertin, who wanted to promote peace and international brotherhood through sport. This inaugural event laid the foundation for a global sporting event that has since become an iconic institution.
The Origins of the Modern Olympic Games in 1896
The modern Olympic Games originated in Greek Antiquity, where the first competitions took place in Olympia in the 8th century BC. However, it was in the 19th century that the idea of resurrecting these games took shape, carried by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Convinced that sport could contribute to education and peace among nations, in 1894 he organized the Olympic Congress in Paris, which led to the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Athens was chosen as a host city in tribute to the ancient roots of the Games, and the organization was supported by King George I of Greece, which made it possible to mobilize the necessary resources for this pioneering event.
The Tests and Marking Athletes of 1896
The Olympic Games of 1896 included approximately 280 participants from 14 countries, competing in nine different disciplines, including athletics, gymnastics, fighting, shooting and cycling. Among the memorable performances, that of Greek athlete Spiridon Louis, who won the marathon, remains engraved in memories as a symbol of national pride. Other figures such as the American James Connolly, the first modern Olympic champion in the triple jump, and German gymnast Carl Schuhmann, who won several medals, scored the first Games. This competition was a resounding success, setting the stage for a tradition that would grow in popularity and importance over the decades.
The Olympic Games of 1896 have thus returned to a thousand-year history to inaugurate a new era of international sport. Beyond the competition, they embodied an ideal of peaceful gathering among the peoples, thanks to the passion and sports spirit of the first modern athletes. Since this founding edition, the Games have ceased to develop, becoming a unique moment when the whole world celebrates excellence, diversity and sports fraternity.
