Before 1521, Aztec religion dominated daily life. The Aztecs believed that they had to feed the Sun with human blood to maintain the balance of the world. Their temples were dedicated to powerful deities like EightzilopochtliGod of the Sun, or Tlaloc, God of the rain.

In 1521, Hernán Cortés, head of Spanish troops and indigenous allies, siege TenochtitlánThe Aztec capital. When the city falls, it is a whole religious system that collapses. Temples are destroyed, priests are killed, and rituals are forbidden.

After the conquest, the Catholic Church undertook a vast campaign of evangelization. Old beliefs are demonized, and Aztec symbols erased. Christianity became the dominant religion, imposed by Franciscan, Dominican and Jesuit missionaries.
